AVOID
THE POTENTIAL OF
CHOKING IN YOUR BABY
Children under the age of four years are at risk of choking.
In fact, approximately 75% of all choking episodes involve
food. In order to avoid the potential of choking in your child,
follow the guidelines below:
• Never leave your child unattended while eating;
• Avoid using teething medications that numb their
throat or tongue. This can interfere with their eating patterns
and swallowing sensation;
• Avoid small or round foods such as hot dogs, grapes,
nuts, olives, candies, jelly beans, popcorn, fruits with pits
and creamy sticky foods such as peanut butter;
• Make sure your child does not eat when s/he is crying
or laughing;
• Avoid feeding your child in the car;
• Keep mealtime calm and relaxed.
While introducing food into your baby’s diet may seem
stressful at first, by following the simple steps above, you
and your baby will begin to discover a world of fun at to
mealtimes!
